Cox, Frank Rowland

[E] Cox, Frank Rowland, professor of sing-
ing, born at Exeter, September, 1819. In-
tended to follow his father's profession, a
solicitor, but deciding for music, was admitted
as an out-student of the Royal Academy of
Music in October, 1839, and, later, was a
pupil of Domenico Crivelli. In 1849 he was
appointed an Assistant Professor of Singing
at the Royal Academy of Music ; in 1852 was
made an Associate, and in 1862 elected a
Member. He joined the Committee in 1868,
and was elected a Director in 1880. With the
exception of a short period passed at Trent-
ham, his whole j)rofessional life was devoted
to this Institution. He died in London, April
3, 1891, at the age of 71. Translator of Cri-
velli's " L'Arte del Canto," last edition, 1850.
