[E] Hilton, John, composer and organist, was
born at the end of the 16th century. Mus.
Bac, Cantab., 1626. Organist and clerk of
St. Margaret's, Westminster, 1628. He died
in March, 1657, and is buried in St. Marga-
ret's, Westminster.[W] Works. — Ay re-, or Fa-las for three voyces,
London, 1627, also edited by Warren for
Musical Antiquarian Society, 1844. Catch
that catch can ; or, a choice collection of
catches, rounds, and canons, for three or four
voyces, . . London, 1652. Service in G minor.
Anthems. Elegy on William Lawes, 1648.
Fair Oriana, beauty's queen, madrigal for
five voices, and Pair Orian, in the morn, for
six voices, are in the Triumphs of Oriana. The
anthem, " Lord for thy tender mercies sake,"
usually ascribed to Richard Farrant, has also
