- Bantock, Granville
[E] Bantock, Granville, composer, born in
London, August 7, 1868. Intended for the
Indian Civil Service, and then for a scientific
career. He did not enter upon serious musical
study until the year 1889, when he becaixie a
pupil of Dr. Gordon Saunders, at Trinity Col-
lege, London. He entered the R.A.M. the
same year, and obtained the Macfarren Scholar-
ship. While at the Academy he was very pro-
ductive as a coniposer, and several works were
performed at the Academy concerts. He was
engaged as conductor for a provincial tour of
the Gaiety Company, and also for an extended
tour in the United States of America and
Australia. In 1893 he undertook the editor-
ship of the new Quarterly Musical Review
