Lloyd, John Ambrose

[E] Lloyd, John Ambrose, composer, born
at Mold, Flintshire, June 14, 1815. Father
of Charles Francis Lloyd {q-v.). Though in
the main self-taught, he gained the reputa-
tion of being the most refined Welsh com-
poser of his day. His cantata, "The Prayer
of Habakkuk " (1851), was the first work of
its class produced in Wales ; his anthem,
" The Kingdom of the Earth " (Eisteddfod
Prize, 1852), is still the most popular anthem
in Wales; and his part-song, "The Last
Flower," is looked upon as a Welsh classic.
In 1843 he published a collection of Hymn-
tunes ; and a second, "The Praise Offering,"
in 1873. Several of his hymn-tunes were
awarded prizes. He often acted as adjudi-
cator at the National Eisteddfodau. Died at
Liverpool, September 14, 1874.
