- Lumley, Benjamin
[E] Lumley, Benjamin, writer and operatic
manager, was born in 1812. He was brought
up to law, and became solicitor in 1832.
Manager of Drury Lane Theatre, 1841-52
and 1856-58. He died at London, March 17,
1875. Lumley produced a number of operas
by Donizetti, Verdi, Costa, Halevy, etc., and
among the singers who appeared under his
management may be named Lind, Cruvelli,
Johanna Wagner, Piccolomini, Tietjens, Giu-
glini, Ronconi, etc. He wrote a work en-
titled, " Reminiscences of the Opera," Lond.,
