[E] Macdonald, Alexander, musician of last
half of 18th and early part of present centu-
ries. He was joint music-master of Heriot's
Hospital, Edinburgh, 1807-10, with Archibald
Macdonald, his father, or other relative ; and
held the post of precentor of Old Greyfriar's
Church, Edinburgh, from 1804 to 1817. He
compiled " A new collection of Vocal Music,
containing Church tunes, anthems, and songs
for the use of the several hospitals of this
city," Edinburgh, 1807. He is also, in all
probability, the author of " The Notation of
Music simplified, or the development of a
system in which the characters employed
in the notation of language are applied to the
