Manners, Charles

[E] Manners, Charles, properly Southcote
Mansergh, bass vocalist, born in London.
Fourth son of Colonel J. C. Mansergh, K.H.A.,
and J. P. for Cork and Tipperary. He studied
at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and
obtained the Albert Scholarship. Later he
went to the R.A.M., London, and afterwards
studied in Italy. In 1887, he joined the Carl
Rosa Opera Company, touring in the provinces
for two years. In 1890, he appeared at
Covent Garden, as Bertram, in "Robert le
Diable " ; and has sung there and at Drury
Lane since that time. He made his first
appearance in America at the Seidl orchestral
concerts. New York, Jaiuiary 8, 1898. Toured
in opera. Cape Town, with great success,
1896-7. He married, July 5, 1890, Miss
Fanny Moody (g.v.), with whom he has since
been associated in artistic enterprises, forming
a company for concerts and opera recitals.
In 1895 he offered a prize of £100 for an opera
