Marks, James Christopher

[E] Marks, James Christopher, organist
and composer, born at Armagh, Ireland, ^lay
4, 1835. Chorister at Armagh Cathedral,
under Robert Turle, 1842-51 ; deputy organist,
1852. Pupil of F. Hart for violin. Ap-
pointed organist and choirmaster, St. Finn-
barre's Cathedral, Cork, in 1860, an office he
still holds. Graduated Mus. Bac, 1863 ;
Mus. Doc, 1868, Oxford. Conductor of Cork
Musical Society, and has given many high-
class concerts. He has composed an oratorio,
" Gideon "; an anthem, "If we believe," for
soli, chorus and orchestra ; and has published
songs and pf. pieces, etc.

[+] His son, James Christopher Marks, bora
at Cork, July 29, 1863, is an organist and
composer. He was a chorister at Cork Cathe-
dral from 1871 ; and in 1883 was appointed
organist and choirmaster of St. Luke's
Church, Cork, where he remains. His com-
positions comprise anthems. The day is past
and over ; The souls of the righteous ; and
others ; Evening Services in B flat, A and D.
A number of songs, including My loved one,
sleep secure, which won the prize offered by
Methven & Co., Edinburgh, 1893; part-songs.
Blow, ye gentle breezes ; I'll think of thee,
