[E] Matthews, Julia, soprano vocalist and
actress, born in Australia. She sang princi-
pally in opera bouffe, and appeared in the
title - part of Offenbach's " La Grande
Duchesse," on its first production in Eng-
lish, Covent Garden, November 16, 1867.
She was also the original Madame Lange, in
the English version of Lecocq's " La Pille de
Madame Angot," produced at the Philhar-
monic Theatre, London, November? 187.3.
She died at New York, May, 1876, at the
early age of 34.
