Neale, Rev. John Mason

[E] Neale, Rev. John Mason, hymn writer,
amateur musician, and clergyman, was born
at London, January 24, 1818. Educated at
Cambridge. Curate of St. Michael's, Guild-
ford, 1841. Warden of Sackville College, East
Grinstead. He died at East Grinstead, August
6, 1866. He composed "An Easter Carol"
[1849] , and some Church music, but is chiefly
remembered by his works on the Eastern
Church, and various popular hymns, pub-
lished in such collections as Hvnms for the
Sick, 184.3 ; Hymns for Children, 1843 ;
Hymns chiefly mediaeval, 1865 ; Hymnal noted,
1851-54, 2 vols. Carols for Christmas-tide,
1853 ; Carols for Easter-tide, 1854, both edited
by Helmore.
