North, James M

[E] North, James M., vocal teacher and
composer, born at Huddersfield in 1835. He
was taken to the United States in 1842, and
was a pupil of Lowell Mason, G. F. Root, and
G. J. Webb. He was successively a teacher
in St. Louis, and in the New York State
Normal School, Albany, from 1859 to 1860.
Afterwards director of music in the public
schools. Editor of Vocal exercises and various
collections of music for church and choral
society use.
