[E] Barr, Samuel, composer and writer, was
born at Glasgow, in 1807. Self-taught in
music. Ho was a teacher in Glasgow, and
precentor in Dr. Wardlaw's (Independent)
Church. Professor of Music in the Mechanics'
Institute, Glasgow. Died, Glasgow, May 16,

Barr was well known in Glasgow and the
West of Scotland as a teacher of merit, and
is generally supposed to have introduced class
