- Petrie, George
[E] Petrie, George, antiquary and author,
born at Dublin in 1789. He was a painter in
Ireland, and was librarian to the Hibernian
Academy. Attached to the Irish Ordnance
Survey, and held other appointments. Died
at Dublin, January 17, 1866. Compiler of the
Petrie Collection of the ancient music of Ire-
land, Dublin, 1855, vol. 1 and pp. 1-48 of vol.
2 all published ; and author of an " Essay on
Music " in the Dablin Examiner of 1816. His
collection of Irish music is very valuable.entry id: 318-L-14
