Pitts, William John

[E] Pitts, William John, organist, born at
Tansor, near Oundle, April 17, 1829. Organist
at Elton, Huntingdonshire when fourteen ;
and when the Oratory at Kensington, London,
was founded he was appointed organist, and
has been actively engaged in his duties for 55
years. Composer of the hymn tune known as
" Princethorpe," and some other vocal music.
His father was an organ builder, and he had
two brothers organists, James Pitts, formerly
of the R. C. Church at Brook Green, Hammer-
smith ; and John Pitts, formerly organist to
the Duke of Norfolk, Arundel. Both are now
deceased. John and Ernest Pitts, sons of
the last named, are pianists, and have gained
some reputation on the concert platform, from
1887 onwards.
