- Pringle, Godfrey
[E] Pringle, Godfrey, composer, of Scotch
descent on his father's side, his mother being
Hungarian, was born November 30, 1867,
while his parents were travelling on the Con-
tinent. Much of his early life was passed in
Italy, and in 1882 he was at Bayreuth when
"Parsifal" was produced, and had the hap-
jjiness of personal acquaintance with Wagner.
The influence of that time decided him to
make music his profession, and he studied at
the R.C.M. under Villiers Stanford, producing
part of an Italian opera, " Messaliua," in
1890, which he finished after leaving the
Co lege in 1891. His orchestral ballad,
" Durand " (based on Uhland), was produced
at the Crystal Palace, October 14, 1893 ; and
a rhapsody, " Lo Zingaro," for baritone solo
and orchestra, November 10, 1894. He has
also written an orchestral suite, "Bella
Milano," and is engaged on an English opera.
His other works include a Romance, for
violin and orchestra ; Fantasia, 'cello and
pf. ; pieces for pf., songs, etc.entry id: 328-R-23
