[E] Bartholomew, William, scientist, writer,
and violinist, was born in London in 1793.
Married to Miss Ann S. Mounsey, April 28,
1853. Chiefly known as the adapter of the
librettos of Mendelssohn's works. Died in

connection with Mendelssohn, with whom
his intercourse was friendly and intimate.
Mr. Bartholomew wrote many hymns of con-
siderable merit, in addition to the works
