Purcell, Thomas

[E] Purcell, Thomas, composer, uncle of
preceding, was born in the first half of the
17th century. He was a gentleman of the
Chapel Royal in 1660, and Lay-vicar and
copyist, Westminster Abbey, 1661. Composer
in ordinary to the King, with Humphrey, in
1662 ; and master of the royal band of music
(also with Humphrey), 1072. He died at Lon-
don, July 81, 1682. He composed some chants,
some of which are now in common use.
