[E] Reade, Charles, novelist, was born in
1814 ; died, London, April 11, 1884. Author
of " Cremona Violins, four letters descriptive
of those Exhibited in 1873 at the South Ken-
sington Museum, also giving the data for
producing the True varnishes used by the
great Cremona makers, reprinted from the
Pall Mall Gazette by George H. M. Muntz,"
Gloucester, 1873 ; also reprinted in Reade's
miscellaneous works entitled " Readiana."
Reade is best known by his novels " Hard
Cash," "It is never too late to mend," etc.
