born at Stockton in 1752, died at London in
1803. Compiled, among other valuable and
interesting works, "Ancient Songs, from the
time of King Henry the Third to the Revolu-
tion. Prefixed are observations on the
Ancienb English Minstrels, and Dissertation
on Ancient Songs and Music," London, 1790.
" Scottish Songs, with the Music, and His-
torical Essay . . ." London, 2 vols., 1794.
Reprinted, Glasgow, 2 vols., 1869. Also an
English Anthology, Ballad Collections, and a
Bibliographia Poetica, etc.
