- Rooke, William Michael
[E] Rooke, William Michael, or Rourke,
composer, born at Dublin, September 29,
1794. He was self-taught in music, with the
exception of a few lessons from Dr. Cogan.
Chorus-master and deputy-leader at Crow
Street Theatre, Dublin, 1817. He settled in
England, and became chorus-master at Drury
Lane Theatre, London ; leader at Vauxhall,
under Bishop, and teacher of singing. He
died at London, October 14, 1847.[W] Works. — Operas: Amilie, or the Love
Test, London, 1837 ; Henrique, or the Love
Pilgrim, London, 1839 ; Cagliostro, opera
(MS.) ; The Valkyrie, opera (MS.) ; Overture
for orchestra ; Polonaise for violin ; Farewell
merry maids (chorus). Songs: Little Cupid
once tapped at a maiden's heart ; Hark the
