[E] Ross, William, piper, was born in Ross-
shire, about 1815, and died at Windsor, in
August, 1891. In 1839 he joined the 42nd
Highland Regiment, and remained in it till
1854, when he was appointed pix^er to the
Queen. He issued a " Collection of Pipe
Music," 1869, and another edition, " with an
essay on the Bagpipes and its music, by the
Rev. Dr. Norman Macleod " [1876] ; 3rd
edition, 1885.
