- Severn, Charles
[E] Severn, Charles, organist, contrabassist
and violoncellist, born in London, 1805. He
was a Court musician at the Queen's accession,
and played at her coronation. For many
years a member of the principal orchestras in
London, and of the provincial Festivals. He
was in the orchestra at Birmingham on the
production of " Elijah," 1846. He was also
organist for forty-six years of Islington Parish
Church. A fire broke out at his residence,
Liverpool Road, Islington, April 14, 1885, in
which his wife was burnt to death. He was
then still organist at the church. He died at
the end of December, 1894, having almost
attained his ninetieth year. He wrote a glee.
The Sunset, and a few other part-songs,
motets, songs, etc., and edited " Psalm and
Hymn Tunes, Chants, etc., for the use of the
Parish Church of St. Mary, Islington."
