Shore, John

[E] Shore, John, trumpeter, was born in the
latter part of the 17th century. He succeeded
his brother William in office of sergeant
trumpeter. Trumpeter in the Queen's band.
He died November 20, 1750. He is credited
with the invention of the tuning-fork. The
most celebrated trumpet-jjlaj'er of his time.
He was succeeded in his office by Valentine
Snow. His sisttr Catherine, born in 1668,
was a i^upil of H. Purcell. Married Colley
Cibber in 1693. Appeared as a singer in
operas by Purcell and others. She died in
1730, The founder of the Shore family was
Matthias (died 1700), who was King's
trumpeter in 1685, and was succeeded by his
son William (died 1707).
