Smith, George Townshend

[E] Smith, George Townshend, organist
and composer (brother of Alfred Montem and
Samuel Smith), born at Windsor, November
14, 1813. Son of Edward Woodley Smith,
lay-clerk of St. George's Chapel, Windsor,
He was a chorister in St. George's Chapel,
Windsor, under Highmore Skeats, and he
also studied music under S. Wesley. Organist
successively of the old Parish Church, East-
bourne; of St. Margaret's, Lynn ; of Hereford
Cathedral, 1843. He acted as conductor and
honorary secretary of the Three Choirs Fes-
tivals. Died at Hereford, August 3, 1877.
He composed anthems, songs, and other vocal
music, also quadrilles and other light music
for the pf.
