Smith, Samuel

[E] Smith, Samuel, musician and promoter
of tlie Tonic Sol-fa, was born in 1806. He
was a pioneer in the movement for promoting
the chanting of psalms in nonconformist
churches. 'He identified himself with musical
affairs in Bradford, and was the chief founder
of St. George's Hall and the Bradford Festival
Choral Society. He died at Bradford, July 5,
1873.
