[E] Airy, Sir George Biddell, astronomer,
born at Alnwick, June 21, 1801. He was
educated at Cambridge, etc., and in 1835 was
appointed astronomer-royal. He died on
January 1, 1892. Author of "On sound and
atmospheric vibrations, with the mathemati-
cal elements of music," London, 1868 ; also
many works on astronomical and mathemati-
cal subjects.
