Taylor, Brook

[E] Taylor, Brook, mathematician and mu-
sician, born at Edmonton in 1685. He
distinguished himself at Cambridge, and
became Secretary of the Royal Society in
1714. He died in 1731. Celebrated for his
theorem, which Lagrange adopted as the
basis of the differential calculus. He was the
first to publish analytical researches into the
vibrations of strings, and contributed to the
Philosophical Tran.sactions of 1713 a paper on
the " Motion of a tense string."
