Allan, James

[E] Allan, James, the "celebrated Northum-
berland piper," was born at Rothbury, March
1734, and died in Durham jail on November
13, 1810. He was well-known all over the
borders as a strolling vagrant, and his bio-
graphy by James Thompson was issued as the
"Life of James Allan, the celebrated North-
umberland Piper, detailing his surprising ad-
ventures, etc." Newcastle, 1817. This has
been frequently reprinted as a chap-book.
