Bruce, John

[E] Bruce, John, violinist and composer, was
a native of Braemar, and accoi'ding to Burns,
who linew him well, " a red-wud (i.e., stark-
mad) Highlander." He settled in Dmnfries
after the rebellion of 1745, in which he took
part, and died there December 31. 1785. He
is generally regarded as the composer of the
air usually sung to " Whistle o'er the lave o't."
