Butt, Clara

[E] Butt, Clara, contralto vocalist, born at
Soutliwick, near Brighton. Studied under
D. W. Roothana, Bristol, for some years, and
sang at Miss Lock's concert, December, 1889,
with success. Entering the R.C.M., she dis-
tinguished herself at the College concerts, and
particularly in the performances of opera.
She made her debut at the Albert Hall, as
Ursula in Sullivan's " Golden Legend," Dec.
7, 1892, and sang there in oratorio (Israel in
Egypt) the next year. Her Festival debid
took place at Hanley, October 21, 1893, and
she sang at the Bristol Festival, October 25,
of the same year, she appeared at the
Handel Festival of 1894, and has sung at the
princiiDal London and provincial concerts.
