[E] Alsop, John, composer of present time, of
Newton Abbey, was awarded the Sir Michael
Costa Prize of ten guineas. Trinity College,
London, with the gold medal, 1888, for an
orchestral overture in F. He is also the com-
poser of a cantata, " The Sower " [1895].
