2359: | Ashton, Charles, tenor singer, born at |
2360: | Lincoln, Feb. 1, 1815. In 1822 he became |
2361: | a chorister in the cathedral under Benjamin |
2362: | Whall, the choirmaster. Appointed first tenor |
2363: | at Lincoln Cathedral, 1831, and held the post |
2364: | till 1841. He also acted as organist in the |
2365: | churches of St. Peter's at Gowts, and St. |
2366: | Peter's in Eastgate, Lincoln. He was leading |
2367: | tenor at Durham Cathedral from 1841 till |
2368: | 1862. He was a successful teacher of singing, |
2369: | and sang at many of the provincial festivals. |
2370: | Died at London, July 11, 1862, when there |
2371: | seeking medical advice. He published several |
2372: | anthems arranged from Beethoven, Mozart, |
2373: | etc., and issued " Services of the church . . . |
2374: | consisting of the Preces, Responses, etc., as |
2375: | sung in Durham Cathedral . . ." London, |
2376: | 1844. Several of his children inherited his |
2377: | musical taste, among whom are Algernon and |

2380: | Ashton, Diana Uvedale 16-R-42 Ashton, Diana Uvedale, daughter of the |
2381: | preceding, born at Durham, October 21, 1840. |

2383: | great ability, was sent to Leipzig, where she |
2384: | received instruction from Moscheles, Haupt- |
2385: | mann, and E. F. Richter. Returning after |
2386: | three years' stay in Leipzig, she intended |
2387: | settling in London, but the unexpected death |
2388: | of her father necessitated a change in the |
2389: | plans of the family. For some time she |
2390: | remained in Durham, occupied in teaching ; |
2391: | but seeking a wider sphere for her talent she |
2392: | went to New York, and later to Chicago, |
2393: | where she married a German musician, Louis |
2394: | Staab. She lost all her property in the great |
2395: | fire at Chicago in 1871, and never recovering |
2396: | the shock of that terrible event, this accom- |
2397: | plished artist died in New York, December 21, |
